Converting Ps2 CD Games to DVD games (For ESR)
« on: March 08, 2010, 04:10:49 PM »
Hey guys, for all you who use ESR, you will know by now that you cannot play CD games on it.
Well luckily, i learned how to be able to convert CD games to DVD games :) and i thought it would be really beneficial for all of you people who'd like to play them.

I would like to remind you people, if you do not feel confident/comfortable in doing this, please make a request for a "DVD Conversion" of a specific game here: http://projectblacktower.org/index.php?board=20.0

Right, now on the tutorial!

Step 1. First of all, Download a game from here extract it etc untill you are left with the bin/iso etc.
OR if you are ripping your own game, Use IMGBURN and select create image file FROM disc, the slower you do it, the better.

(for further information on IMGBURN take a look at the toolbox sticky: http://projectblacktower.org/index.php?topic=141.0 )

Step 2. Now, download CDmage
Link: http://cdmage.orconhosting.net.nz/frames.html

Open CDmage up.

right go to "File" and select "open" locate you ISO file or .Bin file.

Right click track 1 and select "Data track properties" and take note of this info:

(you will need this for later on, so make sure you take a screenshot or type it into notepad)

Step 3. Select all files and right click, then select "Extract Files" to a new folder on your desktop (for mine, i put it in a folder called MDK2, because i was converting that game)

Step 4. Download DVD Scan Lite 3.7 from :
http://www.sksapps.com/index.php?page=mis.html
(just look down the list and it'll be there)

open it and MAKE SURE you select DVD

right, now i would just go into the folder which you put all those files into (from that CDmage program) and Select ALL files.

if you see this screen just select No, do not select folders scan files only, than go inside any folder and repeat the procedure.

after this is done, you should see information like this:

Step 5 - Time to use/create the Dummy File!

A Dummy file is necessary for this conversion to work!
The image must be atleast 1.4 gigs for it to boot up with ESR, hence this is why we must create a dummy file.

I would recommend just using this dummy file which I created myself (took me a little while lol)

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=126DXQSH

just remember to uncompress this file (you will get a folder and inside it a file, do not extract that file.)

Anyways, if you want to take it the hard way This is how to create a dummy file:

Go to "command prompt"

type:
Code: [Select]
fsutil file createnew c:\z.z 1073741824[/size]

(c:\ is your harddrive root folder) you may change this directory to where ever you'd like.
You probably noticed that 1073741824 is a huge number, that's how many BYTES are in a Gigabyte (aprox). (I would actually make it to around 1.4 which is 1503238553 )

Now, put this "dummy File" into the folder which contains your files from the CD you ripped!

Step 6 Right, time to make a CD image (prefferably ISO)

Remember IMGBURN? your gonna use that again, but this time, your gonna need to select "Create image from files/folders"

You'll get this screen now:

right, so... Select the folder which all the files are in.
Remember the information of that cd i asked you to note down or take a screen shot of? your gonna need it for this part as you can see. ^
So your gonna have to fill in the bits just like it has just been done there (you'll get the idea of it)

select an output folder, and then select build :D

Step 7 - now to patch the game, this is very easy as it doesn't require much

Please download The ESR disc patcher :) you can get it from here:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=C7FTWC8C

this is very simple, just open up the patcher, select "patch" then locate your iso that you made, then select "open"

If successful, you should get the follow screen:

(ignore the background lol)

And Finally - It's time to burn that patched Iso!

open up IMGBURN, this time Select "Write image file to disc"

I would recommend you burn at 4x speed (that's the average speed people burn at and i recommend it personally)

once it is burned, it should work, pop it into your ps2, fire up ESR and load the game!

I hope this tutorial was helpfull, if you have any questions or are unclear please feel free to ask
For any information on helpfull tools which are included in this tutorial please consult:

http://projectblacktower.org/index.php?topic=141.0

Thank you for reading this tutorial and i hope it has worked for you, i have confirmed for it to work and so has Rooskie!

Untill next time, have fun!

New member, first post so please be gentle with me.

I've followed half a dozen other tuts and all I've burned up to now is a dozen or so coasters and I'm sure that before I put a match to the sodding thing I'll drop a good few more, so I followed your guide to the letter but then hit a stumbling block. Step 3 of your guide has 3 pictures in it but I'm not seeing the information displayed in the third image. In the window when I do it, it says 'Scanning XXXXX.IRX' 'Scanning YYYYY.IRX' and Scanning ZZZZZ.IRX' etc but nowhere do I see the 'Current mode: CD, Patched for dvdr' text that's displayed in the guide picture. Any idea as to what I'm doing or have done wrong? I've still burnt the discs anyway and obviously they failed. I've tested the duds on both a proper PS2 that's got a Messiah in it and also on my slim 7000 series PStwo with the ESR mod. Any and all advice appreciated.

Is there a list somewhere/anywhere that lists what can and can't be converted? Up to now I've tried SEGA Rally 95 (NTSC J), FantaVision (NTSC J) and Disney Golf Classics (NTSC U) and they are all crapping out.

Step 4,sorry, not step 3. It's the DVD 3.7 where I'm coming unstuck and the info in image 3 is eluding me  :(  :(

Usually the system files (the only files which need to be scanned and subsequently won't prompt you) are in the root, but they could be elsewhere.  Keep in mind that it won't include files inside folders so if you want to scan files inside folders you'll have to do a scan for each folder.

Again, I've followed the guide to the letter, meticulously checking and rechecking that what I'm doing is right and still all I'm burning is coasters  :(

At the beginning of the thread it does say 'if you do not feel confident/comfortable in doing this, please make a request for a "DVD Conversion" of a specific game here: http://projectblacktower.org/index.php?board=20.0'' so I think that's going to be my only option. Do I request just the title in the header and the fact I want a conversion to DVD in the body of the main text or all in the header itself? Thanks for all the feedback so far, sadly this is just one thing I can't for the life of me work out.

There's no specific format to follow just as long as its clear in your post what you want.  One of us will get to it for you ;)

Also be aware that not all games will covert to DVD properly to play either on ESR or on a chipped system.  I have run into a couple that will not no matter what you do.
